Artist Statement
Working with glass for over 20 years, I have developed a deep connection with the medium. I am constantly expanding and experimenting – striving to allow the glass to speak through my creations. Balancing functionality with beauty has been, and continues to be, one of my primary objectives.
Bio
Katrina Covello was born in Germany and raised in Petawawa, Ontario surrounded by the rugged beauty of the Canadian Shield. As a teenager and young adult, she spent countless evenings and weekends in her father’s stained glass store developing technique and a feel for the glass. Katrina graduated from the University of Waterloo with a Bachelor of Mathematics and worked for 8 years in the information technology field until the birth of her daughter. Seeing the opportunity to pursue a life long dream, Katrina began focusing on glass work. She left the IT field and started a business, KatyBug Designs, through which she could express her creative visions. With much of her past experience in traditional stained glass, Katrina began designing and adapting images for custom windows. Through experimentation, Katrina began mosaicking a variety of surfaces.
Exploration of glass fusion was not far behind. Katrina took courses within the industry and continues to experiment.
Currently, Katrina teaches classes in her home studio and at her father’s stained glass store in Petawawa. She still favours custom work and also does speculative work that she shows and sells at a variety of venues. She does work in traditional stained glass, mosaic using stained glass and fused glass including fused glass jewellery.
